Beliefs

beliefs of the logos institute

Christological: Jesus Christ is the Center of the Christian faith. Logos Institute courses are taught from a “Christological” perspective. We value the Scriptures, the words of God, as inspired witnesses that point us to and lead us into union with “The Word” (The Logos) of God, Jesus Christ (John 1:1-18). All courses are prescriptively anchored to core theological conclusions known in Christian history as “orthodoxy.” Historically, Vincent of Lerins is recognized for defining orthodoxy as . . . that which has been believed everywhere, always, by all Christians.

Historic: The “Body of Christ” is at the Center of God’s History. We value Christian faith as extraordinary confidence in Christ’s promises, power and presence. Over the last 2000 years, one of Jesus’ central promises has been that Christ’s Church will prevail throughout all centuries until the end of time (Matthew 16:17-18). The Logos Institute believes that there is only one “Body of Christ.” Christ’s Body has been growing from infancy into maturity over the last 2000 years. In an age of increasing denominations, we think appreciation for the theological unity Christians have displayed in history should inform biblical and theological studies. Accordingly, All Logos Institute courses are descriptively inclusive of the entire 2000-year history of the Christian Tradition.

Reforming: Reformation is a life-long process and not just a historical era. Logos Institute courses are committed to the tradition of “All truth is God’s truth” and “always reforming.” Paul’s ideal vision of Christ’s Body calls all Christians to leave spiritual infancy and grow into spiritual maturity (Ephesians 4:11-16). The One who said “I am The Truth” continuously invites individuals and churches to experience reformation as we study and speak The Truth in love. We think life-long continuing education is one of a number of ways to experience life-long continuing reformation.

Inclusive: Anyone who desires to learn The Christian Tradition may study at The Logos Institute.  We seek to establish relationships and provide support between any churches, organizations and faculty that wish to promote serious Christ-centered continuing education. Based on Jesus’ prayer for Christian unity (John 17), we think it possible for Christians to experience that unity.  We seek to learn from denominational distinctives rather than view them as causes for division. We do this by studying and living on what Christians have agreed is “that which has been believed everywhere, always, by all Christians” in a way that is sympathetic to all Christian denominations.  Accordingly, Logos Institute courses are non-sectarian and descriptively inclusive of the total history of The Christian Tradition.

Scholarly: Christ-centered scholarship unites learning with living. Jesus was “scholarly” and the beauty and simplicity of The Master Teacher’s scholarship is our inspiration. By “scholarly” we do not mean “elitist” or “over the heads” of people. Rather, we think it was Christ The Master Teacher who gave special educational gifts that enable Christians to leave spiritual infancy and mature into the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4: 11-16). The Logos Institute is a foundationally supported institute for researching and teaching The Christian Tradition. Logos Institute courses are informed by scholarly insights yet taught in a way that unites learning with living. We value educational leadership as the gift of inspiring God’s people to study, live and work harmoniously together. We value true knowledge as understanding, in a life-transforming way, the great truths of God’s words and the teachings of Jesus.

Transforming: All Logos Institute courses are designed to answer the call of Jesus Christ to “. . . be transformed by the renewing of your minds” (Romans 12:1-2). Logos Institute courses are opportunities for those who seek to understand and experience how Christians down the ages have understood the mature Christian life. As Paul did in Ephesus, we hope to become a unifying educational center from which transformed individuals return to their communities to inspire transformation wherever it is desired and needed.
